Mentors with Literacy Council of Norristown make a difference. So Can You.
When people hear the words literacy council, they often think of a volunteer group that teaches English as a second language. That is one thing Literacy Council of Norristown (LCN) volunteers may do, but there is so much more.
The photo above shows a mentor match Tyrika and Dave. They've been working together for the past year on achieving Tyrika's goals of attending college and becoming a nurse. She is motivated by wanting to be able to better provide for her five-year-old daughter.
Thanks to her partnership with and advice from Dave, Tyrika has been promoted at her job as a cashier and applied and was accepted to community college. In addition to her full-time job, Tyrika is now taking two courses at community college; she is beginning the journey to becoming a nurse. She credits Dave with helping her gain the confidence to make her dreams come true.
This is just one story of how the volunteers at LCN help adults in our community. Reading, writing, math, financial literacy, and GED preparation are ways LCN volunteers help adults make the changes they want to see in their own lives.
